The alleged Russian missile that hit inside Poland turned out to be an air defense missile fired by Ukraine. Despite this, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg blamed Russia: “This is not Ukraine’s fault. Russia bears responsibility for what happened yesterday because this is a direct result for the ongoing war.”

Analyst Comment: Two pertinent questions remain. First will NATO use this as an opportunity to expand forces along the Ukrainian border despite the fact that this was not an escalation by Russia? Second, was this a failed Ukrainian false flag attempt?

On the second question, this air defense missile was way off course, and with radar and ground observers, it is unlikely Ukraine was not aware their missile was responsible for the strike. And yet, after the missile hit Poland, Ukrainian President Zelensky blamed Russia in a video statement: “Terror is not limited to our national borders. Russian missiles hit Poland. … To fire missiles at NATO territory. This is a Russian missile attack on collective security! This is a very significant escalation. We must act.”
